Control Your Environment

A farmer won the first prize at a country fair for his huge radish that was the exact shape and size of a quart-sized bottle of milk. Many were curious to know how the farmer had been able to grow such a radish. Finally, one gentleman went up to the farmer and asked the question. The farmer replied, ‘It was easy. I got the seed growing and then I put it into the milk bottle. It had nowhere else to go.’

The story is an apt analogy for life.

Our lives are shaped by the kind of surroundings we place ourselves in and the people that we allow to influence us. To allow outside events to call the shots means giving away our power to all the undesirable factors and negativity that exists in the world. We treat the aquarium water and not our fish when it gets sick. We must give ourselves an environment that is conducive to take us from where we are to where we want to be. We should strive to be in the company of people who are pushing themselves and are consistently striving for higher ground—well-read people, creative people, intellectuals, and writers who are always seeking something new.

Living in the world without allowing the world to live in us, is the key.

You don’t have to get involved with each and every person around you and get dragged into their circus. Focus on handling your own circus and its monkeys before you think of taking charge of somebody else’s circus just because it gives you the feeling of being useful. Acting like a fixer and trying to fix everyone else’s problems, rather than focusing on your own issues, is not a great idea. Of course, no one is a self-made person. A lot of people contribute to the success of an individual. It’s good to be there for others, but by fixing their things—which they can fix themselves—you are doing them and yourself more harm. Firstly, you are depriving them of the opportunity to learn and grow through their own mistakes and experiences. Secondly, acting like a ringmaster of every circus in town causes you to lose focus from your own goals. You need not allow yourself to get sucked into somebody’s drama, which in no way belongs to you, and you have no control over it and which you know can very well be solved by the person herself/himself. Steer clear of both the monkey and the circus.

American pastor Harry Emerson Fosdick said, ‘No horse ever gets anywhere until he is harnessed. No steam or gas ever drives anything until it is confined. No Niagara is ever turned into light and power until it is tunneled. No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated, disciplined.’ Creativity demands, at least to some degree, a certain amount of space. There’s a reason why Thomas Edison virtually lived in his lab. There’s a reason why writers surround themselves with books. There is a reason why artists live in their own world.
